I am a slight history fanatic hence the "Metals in History" spots on most of the pages of the website. Recently I have found a couple of podcasts I listen too while I work that are amazing..... one is The History Chicks which main focus is on Women in History...LOVE This!! The other is Stuff you Missed in History class which recently had a two part podcast on "Nikola Tesla and the War of the Currents" which inspired me to find out more about him and was so glad to find that of course like most great minds....he was an animal lover!! LOL!! If you are not familiar here is a brief bio.
Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor, physicist, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, and futurist. He was an important contributor to the use of commercial electricity, and is best known for developing the modern alternating current (AC) electrical supply system. Which is the type of electricity you are using if you are viewing this on a computer!! (AC) is what comes out of the electrical outlets and (DC) or Direct Current is what comes out of a battery! Tesla's patents and theoretical work also formed the basis of wireless communication and the radio!
Tesla was obsessed with pigeons, ordering special seeds for the pigeons he fed in Central Park and even bringing injured ones into his hotel room to nurse them back to health. Tesla was an animal-lover, often reflecting contentedly about a childhood cat, "The Magnificent Mačak.
In his later years Tesla became a vegetarian, living on only milk, bread, and vegetable juices. He wrote: "It is certainly preferable to raise vegetables, and I think, therefore, that vegetarianism is a commendable departure from the established barbarous habit." Tesla argued that it is wrong to eat uneconomic meat when large numbers of people are starving; he also believed that plant food was "superior to [meat] in regard to both mechanical and mental performance". He also argued that animal slaughter was "wanton and cruel".
Tesla had many pigeons he fed and cared for, but one, he was particularly fond of. (Shown Above) He described it as being a beautiful female bird, pure white with light gray tips on its wings. One night the bird flew into Tesla's room at Hotel St. Regis, and he perceived that she was attempting to tell him she was dying. Tesla said a light came from her eyes more intense than he had ever produced by the most powerful lamps in his laboratory. The bird then died and Tesla said that at that same moment, something went out of his life and he knew his life's work was finished.
Having grown up in the country with pigeons as companions I must agree with Tesla...these are amazing and extremely intelligent beings! In fact, one of the very first designs I created was in honor of them and the fact that I too am a homebody...such as the pigeons!! Homebodies unite!! Below are some pigeon designs I have created over the years.....
As a quirky side note, Tesla most likely had OCD and was apparently physically revolted by jewelry, notably pearl earrings. Sorry Tesla:( I put you in such company but at least I have not muddled your name with any pearl earrings!!! LOL!! I would only ever use Vegan Pearls anyway!!!
